Our Story & Mission

How White Owl Rising began — and where we’re going.

From Struggle to Purpose

Why do so many people make it through treatment, only to relapse once real life begins?

I've asked myself that question for years.

Not because I wanted an excuse.

Because I wanted an answer.

I wasn't just trying to get sober. I was trying to figure out how to build a life worth protecting.

My name is Lance Taylor, and this is why I'm building the White Owl Rising Recovery Guide.

My journey has taken me through treatment centers, sober living homes, relapses, back surgery, addiction to prescription pain medication, faith, loss, and more fresh starts than I can count.

There was a season when I stayed sober for two years. I truly believed I had finally figured it out. Then life changed, I took a job on a cruise ship, drifted away from recovery, and relapsed.

For years I kept asking myself the same question:

Why does this keep happening?

The Idea Takes Shape

One day, while sitting at a bus stop in the Heights of Houston, I couldn't stop thinking about an old saying:

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.

That simple thought stayed with me.

For the first time, I stopped thinking only about how to stay sober.

I started thinking about how people rebuild their lives after treatment.

That day, the first seed of what would eventually become White Owl Rising was planted.

Why White Owl

Later, while I was at Manna House, something happened that I still can't explain.

A CD simply appeared in my belongings.

Written on it were two words:

White Owl.

I had never heard the music before, but it met me exactly where I was. It drew me closer to God and reminded me that even in the darkest seasons, He hadn't given up on me.

Not long afterward, several of us saw what appeared to be a white owl.

Maybe it was coincidence.

Maybe it wasn't.

I only know that the image of the white owl has stayed with me ever since — a reminder that even in darkness, there is still wisdom, hope, and a way forward.

Turning Experience Into Purpose

The road after that wasn't easy.

I relapsed again.

I nearly lost my life.

I was in a serious car accident while trying to quit on my own.

I watched my mother begin her fight with cancer.

More than once, I wondered if I'd ever get my life together.

But every setback taught me something.

Recovery isn't just about putting down drugs or alcohol.

It's about learning how to live.

Eventually I found my way to Into Action Recovery in Houston.

That's where everything finally came together.

I stopped asking, "How do I fix my life?" and started asking, "Why is rebuilding after treatment so hard, and what can we do about it?"

That question became the foundation of White Owl Rising.

What White Owl Rising Is Building

White Owl Rising is the first step.

My hope is that someone leaving treatment can open one app and quickly find a meeting, sober housing, a job, transportation, food, healthcare, legal resources, faith communities, and people who genuinely care.

But White Owl Rising is about much more than an app.

I want to help build the kind of community I was searching for — a place where people encourage one another, create music and art, serve their neighbors, find meaningful work, strengthen their faith, laugh together, and discover purpose again.

Recovery isn't just about surviving.

It's about learning to live.

My faith is the foundation of this journey, but White Owl Rising is for anyone who wants to rebuild their life. You don't have to have everything figured out to take the next step.

I'm still growing.

This vision is still growing.

Maybe that's the point.

Some things are built all at once.

Others are built one day, one lesson, and one person at a time.

If my story has taught me anything, it's this:

Our worst chapter doesn't have to be the end of our story.

If you're struggling today, don't give up.

Keep going.

Take one breath.

Then one step.

Then another.

I'd be honored if White Owl Rising could walk part of that journey with you.
